Components comes in two parts - detail (for 2d components) and in-place (for 3d components).
Detail Components is a tool that converts detail groups into detail components (detail items). The advantage of doing this is that detail components area loadable families that can be instanced, scheduled and adapted for parametric use in the future. You can start using the tool in two ways:

Each detail group type is separated into its own section and with its own settings because of the one-to-one conversion between the group type and the family.
You can see the selected group name at the top of the section. That is so that you can easily identify the group.
The Family Name input: This is where you can enter the new family’s name. Note that this field may turn red if there is already a family with that name and the name is not available.
The “Delete selection and place new component” checkbox: Selecting this will delete the selected instances of the group and place an instance of the new family in its place.
The “Also replace all similar detail groups” checkbox: This will make sure to delete all other groups of the same type and place an instance of the new family in their place. It will also delete the group type itself as it is no longer required.
You can see a preview of the valid content of the group that will be transferred to the family in gray at the bottom of the section. This includes lines, hatches, generic annotations and other.
The Convert button: This button is only enabled when at least one of the detail groups has a valid family name (the name is not red and is not empty). The new families will always be from the Detail Items category and will use the default detail items family template.

If you would like to combine multiple groups into a single family, be sure to first select the groups and add them to a new overarching combined group prior to starting the command.
